Biography
Maria Fernandino is professor at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering at NTNU, Norway. She earned her degree in Nuclear Engineering from Balseiro Institute, Argentina, and her Ph.D. degree in Fluid Mechanics from NTNU, Norway. She was a researcher at SINTEF Materials and Chemistry from 2006-2007. She joined the Department of Energy and Process Engineering in 2007.
Lab
The Thermal Two-Phase Flow Laboratory located at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT), at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Our aim is to advance the understanding of fluid mechanics processes, and heat and mass transfer mechanisms in two-phase flow systems in gas-liquid and liquid-liquid systems, under adiabatic, boiling, and condensing conditions.
We study solid-liquid interfacial interactions and the control of the wetting dynamics by designing and fabricating micro- and nano-structured surfaces, and the interaction of acoustic fields with the fluid and particles dispersed in the fluid. Our research approach combines experimental, numerical, and analytical methods.
In the lab we use IR thermography, high-speed imaging, micro PIV-LIF and holograhic microscopy for visualization of the flow and temperature fields inside small size liquid systems as well as around gas-liquid and solid-liquid interfaces and cells. Wihtin acoustofluidics, we focus on the integration of ultrasonic waves with microfluidic systems to manipulate fluids and particles at the micro/nano scale.
We complement our experimental observations with numerical simulations using the NSK model, which combines the Navier-Stokes equations directly with thermodynamics, allowing us to investigate phase change phenomena at the micro-scale.
